Jamming on the Jetty

Jetty and adjacent lawn

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival returns to Sloan's Lake Park on August 29 and 30 for its 26th year. If you have lived here a couple of summers, you already know the rhythm: cars start looking for parking around 8 a.m., the north lawn fills by 10, and the loop trail on the east and north sides effectively becomes a slow-walking food line by early afternoon. The racing is worth watching. The cultural programming, the food stalls, and the crowd energy make this the single biggest day the park gets all year.

Jamming on the Jetty lands on September 19 this year, and it is a different animal than Dragon Boat. Dragon Boat is a citywide festival that happens to be held here. Jamming on the Jetty is a Sloan's Lake Park Foundation fundraiser that happens to be a great party. It runs live music across the day, food trucks and stalls. Every dollar routes back to Sloan's Lake Park Foundation, and the Foundation is doing work the city is not currently doing at scale. The lake averages about 3.3 feet deep right now, down from over 10 feet in some areas historically, and 23 storm drains plus one large ditch feed unfiltered runoff into it.

Parks & Recreation has responded with a water column mixing device in the marina area and four phosphorus mitigation treatments across the summers of 2022 and 2023, plus the forebay and swale system on the north side. The Foundation exists to push for the bigger fix.

If you want a preview of next year, put Sloan's Lake Wide Open on your radar. It is a putt-putt bar crawl fundraiser that routes through six neighborhood bars, and every dollar again goes to Sloan's Lake Park Foundation. Registration for 2026 is already open through sloanslakewideopen.com.

Other Lake Area Attractions

@HeyLetsYoga is hosting an open air yoga class on Thursday, August 20th at 6:30pm at the Lake. This is an all levels outdoor flow class, and registration is required. The cost is a sliding scale contribution, and the recommended contribution is $12-$35. They will set up on the east side, near 22nd and Stuart Street.  To register, sign up here.

Both ChoLon and Gusto opened in the Lakehouse condo building in March 2024. ChoLon's Sloan's Lake location, at 17th and Raleigh, keeps the French onion soup dumplings and the dim sum program that made the downtown restaurant a Denver fixture since 2010, and adds a patio with a direct lake view that becomes the whole point of the room on a September evening. Gusto is the Italian concept next door in the same building.

In September, Alamo Drafthouse across the neighborhood starts programming its fall calendar, with more special screenings and its bar hosting the occasional comedy night. The Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch Library on the Denver side and the Edgewater Library across Sheridan start rolling out fall workshop schedules as well.

Edgewater Market hosts a Monday Night Movie series, a free outdoor screening on the lawn, running July through early October.
