Client Spotlight- Bluestem Landworks

It's the time of year when I find myself strolling through neighborhoods and taking in outdoor spaces that come to life in summer—lush gardens, inviting patios, and thoughtful exterior details. It’s also the season of backyard birthday parties, relaxed dinners under the sky, playdates on the lawn, and simply soaking up the warm Colorado air.

That’s why it feels like the perfect moment to introduce our next Client Spotlight: Adam of Bluestem Landworks. Bluestem doesn’t just design landscapes—they craft outdoor experiences. With an eye for beauty and a commitment to precision, they transform ordinary spaces into stunning, functional environments that invite people to gather, connect, and live well outdoors.

What was the inspiration to start Bluestem Landworks?

After 20 years designing and building landscapes across Colorado, my partner and I realized we missed the hands-on craft and wanted to own and operate a local business. After years of working for a big corporate business, the focus drifted to spreadsheets and distant shareholders instead of the work and the people. Bluestem lets us return to what matters: our people and culture, thoughtful design, precise construction and clients who care about living well outdoors.

What services do you offer?

Pretty much anything outside the walls of your home:
  • Design + 3-D visualization – Our Landscape Architects turn sketches into immersive models so you can “walk” the space before we break ground.
  • Hardscape + masonry – Patios, fire features, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, retaining walls and lighting, all built to thrive in Colorado’s climate.
  • Planting plans – From xeric gardens to lush estate plantings, every tree and shrub is selected for altitude, soil and sun.
  • Irrigation + water management – Smart-controller installs, start-ups and troubleshooting keep landscapes green while conserving water.
  • Estate gardening + seasonal care – Ongoing maintenance, enhancements and snow management keep your investment sharp year-round.

Is there a "best time" of year for people to do their landscaping projects?

Plantings flourish when installed from late May through mid-September. Hardscape patios, walls & kitchens can move ahead almost anytime thanks to Denver’s mild winters. The smartest play: begin design now, secure permits and materials, then land the planting window.

What do you love most about operating your own business?

Freedom and accountability. We set the standards, pick the right craftspeople for each detail, and keep the bar high. Every project brings new puzzles and solving them with our team never gets old. Seeing a client step into a finished project for the first time is still the best part of the job.
